In July 2024, the African fabric quilting community gathered for the fifth time.

Three days. Quilters from across the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and beyond — all in the same virtual room, all there because they loved African fabric and had found each other here.

The fifth summit was a turning point for Quilt Africa, though I could not fully see it at the time. In 2024 I was still in one of the hardest seasons of my life. The summit happened not because everything was easy but because some things carry you — the community, the speakers, the sense of shared purpose that fills those three days in a way I have never been able to fully explain to anyone who has not experienced it.

What I can tell you is what happened in the room.

What the 2024 summit delivered

The speaker lineup that year went deep into both technique and cultural story — which is what the Quilt Africa Summit has always tried to do. Technique without story produces technically accomplished quilts. Story without technique produces beautiful intentions that never become finished cloth. The summit lives at the intersection.

Speakers in 2024 addressed colour theory for African prints, the cultural history of specific textile traditions, improvisational piecing, and the practical mechanics of working with fabrics that behave differently from plain quilting cotton. The sessions were recorded and are available in the Summit Library for anyone who could not attend live.

The community, as always, was the part that could not be recorded. The comments in the chat. The quilts shown in the gallery. The quilter who had been in the BOM for two years and finally felt ready to share her work. The woman who joined the summit alone and left with three new quilting friends.

The energetic duo, Luke Haynes and his lovely wife Nicole, caught everyone's attention with their generous discussion on fabric auditioning.

What carries forward

Summit recap posts are, by nature, written for people who were there. But if you were not at the 2024 summit — and you are curious about what the Quilt Africa community is like before you decide whether to come in July 2026 — this is worth reading as a portrait of what happens here every year.

The quality of the speakers improves every year. The depth of the community conversations deepens every year. The quilts the community shares get more ambitious, more culturally grounded, more personal.

That is what five years of intentional community building looks like.

Thank you. You were part of a summit that happened against the odds — because this community shows up even when the person running it is barely standing. You probably did not know that at the time. But I am grateful you were there.
